The Model 1868 differed from the Model 1866 in that the practice of conversion, by using Civil War rifle musket barrels reduced in caliber by a liner tube, was abandoned in favor of a new barrel made for the Allin rising block action. This arm was retained with minor modifications for almost thirty years. The Model 1870 had an overall length ¼ inch shorter due to a shortened receiver. The ramrod stop was made with a double shoulder to prevent injury to the bore and chamber. The muzzle velocity of the .50-70-450 cartridge was 1240 fps. Penetration in white pine was as follows: 14 in. at 10 yds., 10.5 in. at 300 yds., 8.5 in. at 500 yds., 7 in. at 700 yds., 5 in. at 1050 yds.
Our specimen is marked on the top of the breech block “1870” eagle head “US”. The lock plate is marked in front of the lock “US” “SPRINGFIELD” in two lines and an eagle, and behind the lock “1863”. The left side of the barrel and breech block bear the serial number 34577. The bands are marked “U”. The top of the butt plate is marked “US”. The right side of the barrel is marked “H” with a witness mark. The rear of the trigger guard is marked “103”. The bayonet is marked “US”.
